World Mental Health Day 2020

This year’s World Mental Health Day, on 10 October, comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past months have brought many challenges: for health-care workers, providing care in difficult circumstances, going to work fearful of bringing COVID-19 home with them; for students, adapting to taking classes from home, with little contact with teachers and friends, and anxious about their futures; for workers whose livelihoods are threatened; for the vast number of people caught in poverty or in fragile humanitarian settings with extremely limited protection from COVID-19; and for people with mental health conditions, many experiencing even greater social isolation than before. And this is to say nothing of managing the grief of losing a loved one, sometimes without being able to say goodbye.

The economic consequences of the pandemic are already being felt, as companies let staff go in an effort to save their businesses, or indeed shut down completely.

Given past experience of emergencies, it is expected that the need for mental health and psychosocial support will substantially increase in the coming months and years. Investment in mental health programmes at the national and international levels, which have already suffered from years of chronic underfunding, is now more important than it has ever been.

This is why the goal of this year’s World Mental Health Day campaign is increased investment in mental health. 




 Mental health is one of my advocacy for helping people who suffer mental illness. One of the reasons why I love to spread this awareness because I know their feeling. I always put myself to their shoe. When it comes to topic of mental health, people are not aware of how to approach someone who has suffering sadness, depression, anxieties, and difficulties in life. They keep judging and discriminate so with this post I would like to share my sincerity and encouragement for helping people on how to cheer their selves. I hope you still read my post. 

but first, are you aware about mental health? 





What is Mental Health?

Mental health includes our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It affects how we think, feel, and act. It also helps determine how we handle stress, relate to others, and make choices. Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through adulthood.

Over the course of your life, if you experience mental health problems, your thinking, mood, and behavior could be affected. Many factors contribute to mental health problems, including:

Biological factors, such as genes or brain chemistry
Life experiences, such as trauma or abuse
Family history of mental health problems
Mental health problems are common but help is available. People with mental health problems can get better and many recover completely.

Why People Suffering Mental illness

Researchers are still trying to understand what causes mental illness. There is no one cause — it can happen due to a mix of factors including genetics, how your brain works, how you grew up, your environment, your social group, your culture and life experience.

Some examples of these factors include:

Genetic factors
having a close family member with a mental illness can increase the risk. However, just because one family member has a mental illness doesn’t mean that others will.

Drug and alcohol abuse: 
illicit drug use can trigger a manic episode (bipolar disorder) or an episode of psychosis. Drugs such as cocaine, marijuana and amphetamines can cause paranoia.
Other biological factors: some medical conditions or hormonal changes.

Early life environment:
 negative childhood experiences such as abuse or neglect can increase the risk of some mental illnesses.

Trauma and stress: 
in adulthood, traumatic life events or ongoing stress such as social isolation, domestic violence, relationship breakdown, financial or work problems can increase the risk of mental illness. Traumatic experiences such as living in a war zone can increase the risk of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Personality factors:
 some traits such as perfectionism or low self-esteem can increase the risk of depression or anxiety.


How can you help?

Offer Support

Keep in mind that your friend might not be ready to talk about what they’re going through or simply may not want your help right now. You cannot force someone to get help, so just do your best to be there with your friend through their journey and be ready if and when they do finally reach out. It may be helpful to offer specific things that might help, such as:

  • How can I best support you right now? Is there something I can do or can we involve others who can help?
  • Can I help you find mental health services and supports? Can I help you make an appointment?
  • Can I help you with the stuff you need to get done until you’re feeling better?
  • Would you like me to go with you to a support group or a meeting? Do you need a ride to any of your appointments?
  Being a friend means being there in easy times and more difficult times. If your friend is experiencing a mental health condition, this is a time when he or she needs you the most. And sometimes just talking about it might help your friend feel less alone and more understood. You can be the difference in helping a friend who needs support but is too afraid to seek help. Just a simple conversation can go a long way in helping your friend. You can make a huge difference in someone’s life.

How are you today?

       Hi! I know what are you being through. It's okay not to be okay sometimes. If you asking me I feel the same way too, well kind of the feeling survival. This year is very tough for all of us. All actions are limited but it doesn't mean you need to stop. If you want to change I think this is the perfect time to start changing about yourself. This is not the end. These crazy times teach us on how to be stronger as a person. We need to keep going to fight. Always keep and keep it going. I know you are stronger and I'm here to cheer you up so please cheer yourself too. I feel you! Don't quit, it's okay! You can cry sometimes and that's fine. It's okay to be sad but please don't let yourself stay with that feeling. Help yourself because you are the only one who can help yourself. I know you can always choose yourself. Start loving yourself.

  11. Mental health is a big part of everyone's life. I don't think many people realize that mental health is just more than managing your feelings. It extends to so many other things like you said trauma and stress, as well as alcohol/drug abuse. It is really great to bring awareness and to reach out to others. Not everyone shows it on the outside. So you don't know who it is affecting, but being sincere in asking "how are you?" could potentially save someone's life.

  26. I am working with kids and most of them have some mental issue as a result of their trauma. It's heartbreaking to see how some are suffering in silence and the fight to have them open and accept help.

  33. this is a very important topic..working in a cruise is very tough.being away from family for 8-9 months without a full day off..hardwork and pressure working with different nationalities...if your not tough enough you can easily loose your mind,get into trouble or even loose own life by suicide.its not a secret that it happens,,problems back home makes it worst
